Tonight marks the second Internet Safety for Parents Workshop, sponsored by Elk Grove Adult Community Education. The purpose of this workshop is to create an open dialog that addresses questions and concerns parents might have about keeping their children safe on the Internet.
This workshop includes background information about web 2.0 technologies, including blogs. 2WebWatchers thought this would be a perfect opportunity to invite workshop parents to go live with their comments.
Here are some questions we have for you:
We welcome all feedback and look forward to continued discussions on helping parents assist their children on traveling the Internet Safely, Effectively and Ethically.
Note: All comments on 2WebWatchers are moderated and will appear once approved.

As a parent of boys ages 10 & 12, I want to be able to protect them from undesirable content on the web at home. Currently they are only allowed to ’surf’ when we’re home. Looking forward to gaining some necessary tips!

I chose to attend the iSafety Parent Workshop because I have a 10th & 8th grader who use the internet on a daily basis. As such, I wanted to learn how to make sure that they use the internet responsibly and safely.

1. Concern for safey, and increase awareness of how to prevent, reduce risks.
2. Concerned that kids learn inappropriate internet sites at school via other students that I may not be aware of.
3. Tips, review/comments of various internet sites, i.e myspace, facebook, other popular sites

I have a 2nd grader who now frequently wants to go on to the internet to play games. I am not particularly computer or internet savvy. I am concerned about what she may encounter “accidentally.” For the future, I am concerned about internet predators. We have talked about not giving out personal information and about asking permission before doing things on the internet. However, I wonder if there is more I should be actively doing to preserve her safety. I don’t have an concerns about internet safety at school.

My neighbor attended your workshop and directed me to 2webwatchers. She shared some of the handouts with me and I would like to attend one of your workshops. When will the next one be?

That’s a great question Steve.
According to the “Young People, Music & the Internet” publication by Childnet International, located on the RIAA – Recording Industry Association of America website,
“Copying music you’ve bought to your personal computer or player
is a common activity which can generally be done without legal
consequences.”
You can access the publication by clicking on the link under 2Webwatcher’s “Resource Links”

sjkc – There are several options for you. Free resources are available to you through your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and other avenues. You can also purchase software that sometimes includes a monthly subscription fee.
2WebWatchers is working on a future post that will include information on this topic.
