The Elk Grove Unified School District, in collaboration with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, is proud to announce the 2008 Internet Safety Video Contest. Students in grades 4-12 are invited to produce a video that promotes the safe and ethical use of the Internet.
Students can choose from four categories – PSA (public service announcement), School News & Events, Instructional/How To and Documentary. All entries, with the exception of PSAs, cannot exceed three minutes. A PSA entry cannot exceed one minute. Video titles and credits are not included in the time limit. Awards will be given in three grade-level divisions – 4-6, 7-8 and 9-12 – at an awards ceremony on December 16, 2008.
We invite you to download the contest flyer, guidelines, and entry form – and get started with your video production! Please leave us a comment if you have questions or need additional information about the contest.

Can you tell me the prizes that students can win for the Internet Safety Video Contest? Video production is usually a group activity. Are the prizes dividable for group participants?

Good question, Brad. If you check the entry form, you’ll see that we definitely welcome group projects. As for the prizes, our Internet Safety Committee will be meeting this afternoon. We’ll be finalizing sponsorships and discussing prizes. We’ll post any new information to the blog.

This is a great thing that the district is doing. The students will be motivated to share their knowledge and perhaps give us insight from their perspective.

I think the contest is also a great way for a computer lab teacher to jump into the new school year, no?!

I am going to encourage my Sheldon High School daughter and her friends to create a video. I agree with donnerpclab, it would be interesting to see things from their point of view. I think other students will connect more when it is their peers creating the videos. Great idea EGUSD.

I think that sounds like a great plan. Everything we want to know about keeping our kids safe they know best how to help us protect them.

I am in this class because my daughter really wants a my space page and it totally freaks me out. She has already got a page twice without my permission, so I need to protect her. I realize this is how the kids today comunicate, but I still worry that she could be talking to some pervert without even knowing it. I also would love to learn how to work the parental controls. The more I know the safer I will feel.
